First all-female spacewalk planned

First all-female spacewalk planned”

Anne also will join Nick Hague for the March 22nd spacewalk.

On March 29, the world will witness two Nasa Astronauts namely Christina Koch and Anne McClain undertake a spectacular spacewalk.

The all-female makeup of the team conducting the spacewalk obviously won't have any impact on the work being done, as all NASA astronauts are held to the exact same standards and are equally qualified to handle any scenario whether they're men or women.

McClain is now on the ISS as part of Expedition 58, while Koch is set to blast off on March 14 to reach the station for Expedition 59 and 60 along with Cmdr.

There have been 213 space walks at the ISS since 1998 for the purposes of maintenance, repairs, testing of new equipment or science experiments, according to the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Schedules and assignments for EVA missions can change, but it will be a spacewalk for the history books if all goes as planned.

Despite scheduling the walk at the tail end of Women's History Month, NASA spokeswoman Stephanie Schierholz said that the timing and crew make-up was completely coincidental, saying, "It was not orchestrated to be this way; these spacewalks were originally scheduled to take place in the fall ..."

NASA will broadcast the 7-hour spacewalk at 6:30 a.m. ET on March 29.

The pair, along with Hague, were members of NASA's 2013 astronaut class, which consisted of 50 percent women.

Valentina Tereshkova, from the Soviet Union, was the first woman in space in 1963. The event comes 35 years after cosmonaut Svetlana Savitskaya became the first woman to participate in a spacewalk in 1984.

Earlier this month, Kristen Facciol, the lead flight controller, tweeted her excitement about supporting the first all-female spacewalk.

During spacewalks, astronauts spend an extended period of time on the exterior of the International Space Station. And for the most part, Frazier notes, "spacewalks have been. conducted by male astronauts, with the help of some female crewmembers".
