Dozens injured as Turkish Airlines plane hits turbulence before landing at JFK”

The flight, Turkish Airlines Flight 001 to JFK, orginiated in Istanbul, Turkey.

A Turkish Airlines passenger jet traveling from Istanbul to NY hit severe turbulence Saturday as it approached its destination, with 30 people suffering injuries before it landed safely, officials said.

Port Authority spokesman Steve Coleman said one injury was a broken leg. Officials said it might have been a flight crew member.

Several of the passengers were taken to area hospitals as the rest were evaluated for bumps and bruises on-scene.

The New York City Fire Department tweeted about the incident on Saturday evening, reporting that all of the wounded, two of whom are children, had sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

An emergency was declared after the Boeing 777 landed, with a dozen ambulances waiting at Terminal 1, but the Fire Department of NY said none of the injuries were life-threatening.

The Boeing 777 - which had 326 passengers and 21 crew on board - was over the Atlantic Ocean, about 45 minutes from landing, when it struck the turbulence, Coleman told AFP.

The US National Weather Service had issued advisories on Saturday warning pilots of expected turbulence.

It was the second mishap involving a plane in the NY metropolitan area.
