Hebrew University adds new manuscripts to Einstein archive”

Israel's Hebrew University cracked open its archive on Albert Einstein to reveal never-before-seen hand-written notes and letters penned by the famed Nobel Prize Winner. In a letter dated 50 years later, he expresses that he still does not understand the quantum nature of light (I mean, do any of us, really?).

Einstein left most of his collection to the university after his death in 1955. The paper was a significant milestone in his many attempts to formulate a single unified theory for gravitation and electromagnetism.

Most of the documents constitute handwritten mathematical calculations behind Einstein's scientific writings in the late 1940s.

In a 1935 letter to his son Hans Albert, he expressed dismay that other European powers had not done more to curb Nazis' military buildup.

"I believe that even in Germany things are slowly starting to change", he wrote.

"Let's just hope we won't have a Europe war first ... the rest of Europe is now starting to finally take the thing seriously, especially the British", Einstein declared.

There are also letters that Einstein, born in Germany in 1879, wrote to collaborators that deal with a range of scientific and personal issues, including one to his son, Hans Albert.

"These papers reflect the way Einstein was thinking, the way Einstein was working".

Born in Germany in 1879, Einstein made a decision to immigrate to the United States after Adolf Hitler rose to power in Germany in 1933.

Einstein helped establish Hebrew University and was a member of its board of directors.

Einstein was one of the founders of the Hebrew University. "If they would have come down hard a year and a half ago, it would have been better and easier", he wrote.

Researchers are now preserving and digitizing the new documents, after which they will work to pick through the scientific and mathematical meanings for the calculations found within their margins.

"Whenever someone came to visit our home, we always showed them our "Einstein Wall" which was full of photos and letters from my grandmother's famous cousin".

The collection was donated by a foundation in the U.S. city of Chicago which purchased it from a private collector.

"Out here, nobody knows where I am, and I'm believed to be away on a trip", Einstein wrote in the letter.

These days, Cortell Reisman delivers keynote lectures titled "Letters from Einstein" in which she shares with individuals and businesses how to apply Einstein's principles to increase creativity in their own personal and professional lives.

Following the preservation and digitization of these new documents, HU's Einstein Archives is now working with Caltech's Prof.
