Lawyer apologizes for Ghosn’s ‘disguise’ during release

Lawyer apologizes for Ghosn’s ‘disguise’ during release”

Chairman Carlos Ghosn is considering setting up a press conference by the disgraced automotive executive next week or later, after he was freed on bail on Wednesday from more than 100 days of detention by Japanese authorities for his alleged financial misconduct, it was learned Thursday.

After posting almost $9 million in bail, Ghosn walked out of jail Wednesday dressed in an orange security belt, a blue cap, glasses and a face mask.

Many were baffled by the somewhat transparent disguise, which has riveted Japanese tabloid media.

"The disguise was all planned and carried out by me", Takashi Takano wrote in a blog post today.

Carlos Ghosn's lawyer has apologized for advising the former CEO to leave jail wearing a disguise. "As a result, my immature plan has tarnished the reputation that he has devoted his whole life to building".

Ghosn, who headed the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Motors alliance, has been charged with falsifying financial reports, under-reporting his income and breach of trust in having Nissan Motor Co. shoulder personal investment losses and make payments to a Saudi businessman.

Takano asked the media to give his client privacy, saying people who face trial need to regain their normal lives.

After a judge granted him bail earlier in the week it was only a matter of time before Ghosn left detention, and the press was waiting for him. After the Tokyo District Court accepted his bail request, Ghosn emphasized his innocence in a statement made through a USA representative, saying, "I am innocent".

Mr. Ghosn was released on Wednesday from the Tokyo Detention Centre, where he had been held since his November 19 arrest.

Any violation of those restrictions could land Ghosn back in detention.

The lawyer admitted his plan had ended in failure since the media recognized Ghosn despite his disguise, but said his client managed to be reunited with his family at his residence.

Takano has a reputation for winning quick release on bail.

The former auto titan is looking forward to the press conference he will hold next week or later, Junichiro Hironaka, another defense lawyer for Ghosn, told reporters Friday. While Ghosn was said to be relieved to be released, he initially called the bail terms "somewhat disgusting" and had to be convinced by lawyers to accept the strict terms of near house arrest.

Ghosn led Nissan for two decades, saving the Yokohama-based automaker from near bankruptcy.
