Android Q Beta to Be Available to More Smartphones, May Release Today

Android Q Beta to Be Available to More Smartphones, May Release Today”

The speculation arrives via XDA Developers Editor-in-Chief Mishaal Rahman (h/t Android Police) based on findings in Google's Android Q bug tracker.

If you have a phone such as a Pixel or a phone that received the Beta previous year go and charge it and get ready to check out the beginnings of what to expect in Android Q.

Essentially, it's part of the core OS code, that makes it easier for OEMs to roll out software updates. Some of the phones that we saw running the Android 9 Pie early previews including Essential PH-1, Nokia 7 Plus, OnePlus 6, Oppo R15 Pro, Sony Xperia XZ2, Vivo X21 and the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S.

Adding more phones to the Android Q beta, as well as the ongoing efforts with Project Treble, should help to turn those figures around. During an episode of the Android Developers Backstage podcast, he revealed that "the number is bigger for the upcoming Android release", referring to the number of smartphone makers participating in the Android Q beta programme. The Android Q Beta bug tracker can be used to report issues related to Android Q Beta only and the testers can star or comment on an issue which has been already posted. We had, I believe, eight OEMs including Pixels, so seven OEMs other than Pixel.

We always love to hear about the new Android version and its features. And I think it was for the first time we had all of these companies line up to do developer previews and betas for Android Pie well ahead of the AOSP publication date.

Major versions of Android have been released in August for the past few years now, but that does not mean its too early to be thinking about Android Q. The next major update to Android is expected to transition to developer preview status as early as today. I can not share the exact numbers yet. That test could start as early as today if new resources published by Google are any indication.
