Brexit Talks 'Deadlocked' Despite Appeal to European Union for Last-Minute Concession

Brexit Talks 'Deadlocked' Despite Appeal to European Union for Last-Minute Concession”

Sterling peaked at €1.17 in the moments after David Lidington announced the Brexit breakthrough in the House of Commons.

The EU is unwilling to reopen the 585-page Brexit agreement, though it has offered what it says are legally binding promises that the backstop will not be permanent.

It is understood this would be a legally binding interpretation of the Withdrawal Agreement, but it would not alter the text of the agreement.

The embattled British leader is scrambling to formalize changes to her divorce deal, which was overwhelmingly rejected by MPs in January, in the hope of winning a new vote on the agreement in parliament on Tuesday.

Participating would put the United Kingdom government at odds with Brexiters.

Members of Parliament are set to put forward amendments as soon as next week calling for a second referendum.

"Third. the United Kingdom Government will make a unilateral declaration that if the backstop comes into use and discussions on our future relationship break down. there would be nothing to prevent the UK instigating measures that would ultimately apply the backstop".

The shadow Brexit secretary, Keir Starmer, immediately cast doubt on whether the changes would actually be legally binding, saying: "It sounds again that nothing has changed".

"She said she had been advised this letter would have legal force in global law".

May has promised lawmakers a vote on her deal on Tuesday.

Michael Gove, who campaigned for Brexit in 2016, said if May loses Tuesday's vote, the government would effectively lose control of Brexit.

"Deal fever abounds tonight, but the crucial point is: will this backstop come to an end?"

However, despite renewed talks, there has been no progress, fuelling speculation in Westminster that May would withdraw the motion - called the "meaningful vote" - in the face of certain defeat on Tuesday. The Environment Secretary declared that "everyone who believes in democracy" should get behind the Prime Minister's deal. If that option is voted down as well, the legislature will consider extending the Brexit deadline, now set for 29 March.

Lawmakers are expected to try and make changes to the text of the statement to show that there is majority support for an alternative course of action or to make backing the deal conditional on something such as a second referendum. If that happens, Parliament remains gridlocked, the European Union reluctantly agrees to a short extension to avoid the pain of no-deal, and in three months time we're back to the cliff-edge.

But if the lawmakers reject to leave the European Union without a deal, another vote will be held on Thursday, March 14.

Speaking to Germany's Morgenpost, the Italian politician was asked whether, after almost three years since the referendum and months of negotiation with obstructive Eurocrats in Brussels, he believed other Eurosceptic member states would be inspired by the United Kingdom to leave the bloc.

Lidington said that "negotiations are continuing" in Strasbourg, and the British government will update Parliament at the "earliest opportunity". She survived a bid to oust her through a no-confidence vote in December, so can't be forced from office for a year.

Just 18 days before the United Kingdom is due to leave the European Union on March 29, there is still no ratified divorce deal and talks with the bloc have stalled as May tries to break the political deadlock in London.

And May doesn't really have much way in stopping that from happening as if she delays those votes further, expect a massive uproar in parliament to happen.
