GE Salmon Cleared for U.S. Dinner Plates

GE Salmon Cleared for U.S. Dinner Plates”

According to the FDA, it complied with the guideline by blocking modified salmon from entering the U.S. However, after Congress enacted the National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard relating to food labels in December, the FDA has made a decision to deactivate the import alert. But in 2016, Congress asked the agency to block the salmon from being sold while lawmakers were agreeing on labeling guidelines aimed at informing consumers about the production of engineered foods.

The Food and Drug Administration has lifted an import ban that prevented genetically modified salmon from entering the United States.

Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski, who blocked us sale of the AquAdvantage salmon since 2015, said she is skeptical that federal GMO food labeling rules will mandate labeling of the fish, so she is pursuing legislation to require "genetically engineered" to appear in the market name.

The Food and Drug Administration has lifted its import ban on a brand of genetically modified salmon after Congress blocked the fish from coming to US until the agency finalized its labeling guidelines to inform consumers about what they are eating. A biotech trade group said the fish, which developers say grows twice as fast as as conventional Atlantic salmon on 25% less feed, will "contribute to a more sustainable food supply".

The move comes despite a lawsuit challenging the FDA's original approval of the fish. The company has said they expect final certifications for their Albany facility in the coming weeks. Salmon eggs could then be sent from the company's research and development facility in Canada, and would be harvested after about 18 months when they reach 10 pounds, she said.

However, Wulf added that it has been hard to engage in sales discussions with companies since the ban, but she said limited quantities have been sold in Canada, where it doesn't have to be labeled as "genetically modified".

What's more, the FDA said it analyzed the potential impact the genetically modified salmon would have on the environment and it found no "significant impact".

While the salmon are bred to be sterile females, AquaBounty's own research suggests that it would be hard to guarantee all salmon are indeed sterile, he tells the AP, and there are concerns about the engineered fish breeding with wild salmon.

He also noted the disclosure regulation uses the term "bioengineered", even though most people are more familiar with the term genetically modified.

The genetic modification for AquaBounty's fish is different from gene-editing technology, which lets scientists snip out specific genes to bring about traits without introducing foreign DNA.

In a statement to FOX Business, AquaBounty said if all goes well, it plans to have its first harvest by the Fall of 2020.
