Ilhan Omar thanks Fox News for denouncing Jeanine Pirro’s comments”

Fox News has "strongly condemned" comments made by its host Jeanine Pirro after she questioned whether Rep. Ilhan Omar's hijab meant she subscribed to sharia law.

Jeanine Pirro: "Omar wears a hijab, which, according to the Qur'an, 33-colon-59 tells women to cover so they won't get molested".

Pirro said of Omar's hijab, pictured: 'Is her adherence to this Islamic doctrine indicative of her adherence to sharia law which in itself is antithetical to the United States Constitution?'

CNN's Brian Stelter reported on Monday that Fox News right wing commentators Tucker Carlson and Jeanine Pirro's ugly comments about women and Muslims were undercutting the networks efforts to promote its news division - and as a result the network was growing increasingly anxious about its advertisers.

'They do not reflect those of the network and we have addressed the matter with her directly'.

Omar, a Somali immigrant, has been critical of Israel and has been accused - even within her own party - of invoking anti-Semitic tropes.

But, she tweeted, "It is important to distinguish between criticizing a military action by a government and attacking a particular people of faith".

During her opening monologue on Saturday's "Justice with Judge Jeanine", Pirro talked about Omar's controversial comments about Israel which some have described as anti-Semitic.

Accompanying the Fox News' statement was a lengthy response from Pirro in which the former judge claimed her comments were meant to spark debate, not question Omar's American allegiance.

"OH! So CNN and Fox News SUPPORT death sentence for gays!" And in response to a question about who she believes pays American politicians to be pro-Israel, Omar responded "AIPAC!" refering to the pro-Israel lobby group. "You have Muslims working at the same network you do, including myself. It's not a good one", he tweeted, referencing Omar's comments on Israel in which she said she shouldn't be "expected to have allegiance/pledge support to a foreign country in order to serve my country in Congress". "Fox wants to draw advertisers, it wants to keep running a profitable business, it's trying to promote its news brand".

Outrage was immediate and palpable, But Fox News executives first declined to comment, then waited more than 24 hours before finally issuing a statement saying they "strongly condemn" her comments. "The hijab is not the issue, her anti-Semitism is", said Dillon.

"We are tremendously proud to be part of a body that has put forth a condemnation of all forms of bigotry including anti-Semitism, racism, and white supremacy", said Omar in a joint statement with fellow Democratic Congressmen Rashida Tlaib and Andre Carson - all three of the Muslim members of the US Congress.
