Jets to sign former Vikings Pro Bowl LB Anthony Barr

Jets to sign former Vikings Pro Bowl LB Anthony Barr”

The Jets entered free agency with more than $82 million available under the salary cap.

Although Barr's role transformed in Minnesota, his pass-rushing prowess remained fluid over the past five seasons, during which he notched 13.5 sacks and 31 quarterback knockdowns.

After telling the New York Jets he meant to sign with them, linebacker Anthony Barr got cold feet, changed his mind and informed the Vikings that he will be returning to Minnesota, a source confirmed to ESPN on Tuesday.

The 26-year-old is coming off a 55-tackle, three-sack campaign for the Vikings last year. He transitioned from a 3-4 outside linebacker at UCLA, where he totaled 23.5 sacks from 2012 to 2013, to a 4-3 strongside linebacker in Zimmer's defense.

The reviews on Barr's deal have been mostly positive. NFL Media first reported Barr's commitment flip.

Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer also noted that Barr is a favorite of Williams.

The New York Jets made some minor moves earlier on Monday, including the signing of slot receiver Jamison Crowder from the Washington Redskins.

The Jets finished 21st in defensive DVOA previous year and needed to upgrade their talent on that side of the ball. As inconsistent as Barr was at times, you can't ignore the fact that he was a four-time Pro Bowler and at times, looked like one of the best defensive players in the league.

This move should be the latest in a series of aggressive swings from the Jets, who are trying to use their cap space to build a victor around Sam Darnold in order to snap an eight year playoff drought.

For fans enticed by Kentucky's Josh Allen in this year's draft, think of Anthony Barr as his pro comparison.
