Trump expected to seek $8.6B for border wall in new budget

Trump expected to seek $8.6B for border wall in new budget”

"The budget also proposes that USDA responsibly and efficiently use taxpayer resources by making targeted reforms to duplicative programs and overly generous subsidy programs", the document said.

But Trump's proposed Medicare savings are more than three times as large as those in his previous budget, and industry lobbying groups said the reductions would hurt hospitals and seniors.

The demand, part of the administration's budget request for fiscal year 2020, is more than six times what Congress allocated for border projects in each of the past two fiscal years and slightly more than Trump has corralled by invoking emergency powers this year.

"The Trump budget is breathtaking in its degree of cruelty and filled with broken promises", Sanders, the ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee, said in a statement. Everyone claims to worry about the deficit, but no one's willing to cut spending.

The budget calls the approach "MAGAnomics", after the president's "Make America Great Again" campaign slogan.

Russ Vought, acting director of the Office of Management and Budget, touted that the budget has "more spending reductions proposed than any administration in history".

"We are going to confront the national-security crisis on our southern border", he said, announcing the declaration from the White House Rose Garden on February 15. "It's only now in our third budget that they're willing to have a conversation about the national debt".

The spending plan makes no immediate progress on reducing the federal deficit or the national debt. Another $2.7 billion would go toward ICE detention beds.

"To be clear, this is not funding for endless wars". Who gets more money: The military or everything else?

One of the provisions getting significant attention already is a request for $8.6 billion in border wall funding as part of a total $32.5 billion border security and immigration enforcement ask. This amount will be the remaining portion that is needed in addition to what is being secured as a result of the national emergency declared by the president. Kamala D. Harris (D-Calif.) tweeted, referring to Trump's request for border wall funding.

Now White House is asking for $5 billion from Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and another $3.6 billion in military construction funds from the Pentagon.

It seeks to cut $220 billion from food stamps over the course of a decade, once again promoting the Trump administration's widely panned harvest box proposal, which would take billions in SNAP benefits that are spent in grocery stores and divert the money to supplying low-income people with boxes of wholesale staple foods.

Trump's budget is expected to be rejected by Congress, where Democrats control the House of Representatives.

But Mr. Vought said the plan does not include structural changes for Medicare beneficiaries and that spending on the program will rise every year by "healthy margins".

Officials at NASA Glenn Research Center were happier with how they'd fare under Trump's proposed $21 billion budget for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Accordingly, individuals between 18 and 65 years old will be expected to either work, be engaged in job training, or have community engagement.

In the United Kingdom, low-income families can be covered for up to 85% of childcare costs. The budget proposes a drug pricing strategy that promotes generic drugs and reduces out-of-pocket costs.

"I've spoken with hundreds of teachers as I've traveled across the country and hosted teacher roundtables at the Department, and I heard far too often how limited most teachers are in their own professional development", U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos said in the news statement.

The administration believes the government can save hundreds of millions of dollars by reforming underperforming programs such as Job Corps, which has made headlines in recent years due to security incidents reported at its centers.

Republicans and fiscal conservatives offered tepid praise for the president's proposal, which would not balance the federal budget until 2034.

The number incorporates not just what the White House would need to "continue" building the wall in 2020, but back pay for what the White House believes it should have received in the 2018 and 2019 budgets ($1.6 billion and $5.2 billion, respectively).
