Djokovic, Nishikori, Halep ousted at Indian Wells

Djokovic, Nishikori, Halep ousted at Indian Wells”

"Today, with Novak being number one, top-seeded here, it's a very incredible win for me".

Djokovic and Fognini converted just 1-of-9 of their break point chances and saved 4-of-7 of Rojer and Tecau's break point opportunities in an hour and 36 minutes of play.

He came out with a crisp, confident style, breaking Djokovic in the seventh game and closing out the opening set with a service victor.

But in a match that resumed after rain stopped play following completion of just one game on Monday night, Kohlschreiber looked crisp and confident, breaking the Serbian star for a 4-3 lead in the first and pocketing the set with a service victor on his second set point.

Then it was Kohlschreiber's turn to show some nerves as a string of four errors, including a double fault, gave Djokovic a break back.

The German punched the air in celebration after a video review confirmed that his forehand victor caught the line on match point to seal the biggest upset at Indian Wells this year.

Djokovic was playing his first tournament since lifting a record seventh Australian Open title in January and had won eight of nine prior meetings with Kohlschreiber, but he could find no answer for the German in a 6-4, 6-4 loss.

Here are five things to know about Kohlschreiber ahead of his fourth-round match against Gael Monfils on Wednesday in Indian Wells.

"I congratulate him for playing tactically really well and getting me out of my comfort zone", Djokovic said.

Nadal eased by 25th-seeded Diego Schwartzman 6-3, 6-1, while Federer defeated Swiss countryman Stan Wawrinka 6-3, 6-4.

Nadal, a three-time champion at Indian Wells, did not face a break point in the match.

The Serb, who now holds three of the four Grand Slam titles, was beaten 6-4 6-4 by the German world number 39. "It feels great, it means that I'm pretty old and have been on the tour for a long time", he said at the time.

On Tuesday, the 23rd-ranked Bencic served and returned better.

"I lose to (Kohlschreiber) and get absolutely shredded "same old Kyrgios" how about the guy is just good?"

Federer next faces Britain's Kyle Edmund, who beat Macedonian qualifier Radu Albot 6-3, 6-3.

In another upset earlier, Pole Hubert Hurkacz fired 10 aces en route to a 4-6 6-4 6-3 win over world number seven Kei Nishikori of Japan to reach the fourth round.

The bottom half of the men's draw still includes No 2 seed Rafael Nadal and fourth-seeded Roger Federer, both of whom breezed to victory.
