According to downdetector.com, users are also having problems with Instagram.

Facebook released a statement around 2 p.m., after many users had been experiencing the outage for around 2 hours, stating, "We're aware that some people are now having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps". Both Facebook's desktop site and app appeared to be affected.

A "DDoS" attack refers to a "denial of service" cyber-attack in which an individual or entity would overwhelm servers to block the public from accessing a certain page or network.

The social media giant, which owns Instagram, said it was aware of issues people were having with Facebook's suite of apps.

Meanwhile another user, Layla added: "i can not do anything on my instagram. send messages, like posts, even change my password! nothing is being refreshed or fixed please help. i'm scared i'm being hacked".

Some users have posted on Twitter that they're seeing a message saying Facebook is "down for maintenance".

One said: "Facebook, Messenger and Instagram are down and here I am ranting on Twitter". The outage spans across Facebook Messenger as well.
