Historic test flight for Space X Crew Dragon

Historic test flight for Space X Crew Dragon”

After a six-day mission to the International Space Station, Crew Dragon detached at about 2:30 a.m EST (0730 GMT) and sped back to earth, reaching hypersonic speeds before an 8:45 a.m. EST (1345 GMT) splash-down about 200 miles (320 km) off the Florida coast.

At the moment the results have not be collected and analyzed so its unclear whether or not the mission will impact SpaceX's 2019 launch schedule. This unmanned test flight ferried supplies to the station. Instead, the experimental Demo-1 mission carried a crash-test dummy and a plush toy Earth doll. Falcon 9 and the Crew Dragon's success brought us one step closer to again having the ability to launch humans from American soil.

An unmanned capsule from Elon Musk's SpaceX splashed into the Atlantic Ocean on Friday, successfully completing a mission crucial to NASA's long-delayed quest to resume human space flight from USA soil later this year. "Beautiful parachute deployment", said Benji Reed, the director of crew mission management at SpaceX.

While Space X is the first to complete its test, it is not the only private company contracted by NASA to build the astronaut "taxis" of the future.

NASA and SpaceX teams gathered in the early morning hours at the company's headquarters in Hawthorne, California, to follow the spacecraft's return journey and ocean splashdown. From the images we can see that the outer shell of the craft has suffered burns upon its re-entry into the atmosphere.

It was a crucial milestone in the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Commercial Crew Program ahead of SpaceX's first crewed test flight slated to launch in July with U.S. astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken.

Crew Dragon carried a passenger on this flight test - a lifelike test device named Ripley, which was outfitted with sensors to provide data about potential effects on humans traveling in the spacecraft.

"It won't be long before our astronaut colleagues are aboard Crew Dragon and Boeing Starliner vehicles, and we can't wait", United States astronaut Anne McClain said on behalf of the ISS crew after the capsule left the station.NASA and the administration of President Donald Trump have spent all week extolling the historic nature of the mission. "It's not just for our own astronauts from NASA, but it's also going to carry up crew members from Canada, Europe, Japan and even Russian Federation". Worried about his other fellow astronauts, inanimate or not, he added he is "personally, very anxious to hear how Ripley is feeling after they pull her out of the capsule and get her onto the recovery vehicle".
