Hollywood stars accused of fraud in university 'cheating scam'

Hollywood stars accused of fraud in university 'cheating scam'”

As ET previously reported, Loughlin and Giannulli allegedly paid $500,000 to have their two daughters - Isabella, 20, and Olivia, 19 - deemed as recruits for USC's crew team though they never actually participated in the sport.

In all, 44 people, some of them college coaches, have been charged thus far.

Federal authorities have charged college coaches and others in a sweeping admissions bribery case in federal court.

Court documents said Ms Huffman paid $15,000 that she disguised as a charitable donation so her daughter could take part in the college entrance exam cheating scam.

"Some simply never showed up" to play, Lelling said of the students.

Felicity Huffman (L) and William H. Macy attend the 70th Emmy Awards at Microsoft Theater on September 17, 2018 in Los Angeles, California.

The FBI said 13 defendants have been taken into custody in the Los Angeles area, including Huffman. Loughlin is best known for her role on "Full House".

Prosecutors said it was up to the universities what to do with students admitted through cheating.

The list of impacted schools includes Yale, Stanford, the University of Southern California, Wake Forest, Georgetown, UCLA, and more. "And then I need you to get him into USC, and then I need you to cure cancer and [make peace] in the Middle East", Buckingham told an alleged conspirator in a transcript of a wiretapped phone call.

"There can be no separate college admissions system for the wealthy and I will add there will not be a separate criminal justice system either", Lelling said at the press conference Tuesday. Huffman and Loughlin were not immediately available for comment.

Dvorsiky and Williams, in exchange for receiving the payments, allowed Mark Riddell, a Florida man hired by Singer, to secretly take the tests or to replace the children's answers with his own, according to the indictment.

None of the children were charged on Tuesday.

Singer also helped parents stage photographs of their children playing sports or even Photoshopped children's faces onto stock images of athletes downloaded from the internet to exaggerate their athletic credentials.

The first to cooperate in the probe, beginning in April 2018, has been identified as Rudy Meredith, head coach of women's soccer at Yale.

Fifty parents and coaches have already been charged in connection with the plot that involved parents paying bribes of up to $6million to get their children into elite schools between 2011 and 2018, according to an affidavit filed in federal court on Tuesday.

In some cases, Singer's associates created fake athletic "profiles" in an effort to improve the students chances of getting accepted by making them appear to be highly successful high school athletes.
