Toyota prepares to go into space

Toyota prepares to go into space”

THE JAPANESE Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) is creating a wheeled vehicle to traverse the surface of the moon in 2029, and it has gone to automotive giant Toyota to come up with the vehicle.

The vehicle will run on solar power and Toyota's fuel cell technology.

The moon rover is said to be pressurised to allow the astronauts on-board to live and work without having to constantly wear their space suits.

Toyota and JAXA are eyeing the rover for future manned missions to the moon where mobility is critical.

JAXA President Hiroshi Yamakawa, "Having Toyota join us in the challenge of global space exploration greatly strengthens our confidence". Toyota is touting the fuel cell technology and the 10,000-mile range of the rover. Manned rovers with pressurized cabins are an element that will play an important role in full-fledged exploration and use of the lunar surface.

President of JAXA, Hiroshi Yamakawa said that Toyota joining its mission strengthens the agency's confidence in such a rover.

The pressurized vehicle proposed this week by Toyota is six meters long and 3.8 meters high - or, about the size of two microbuses, the auto company says.

'Meanwhile, the moon has a complex terrain with craters, cliffs, and hills. The 13m² cabin will house two astronauts, and the solar-fuel-cell vehicle is created to have a range of 10,000km. Three LRVs went to the moon on separate Apollo missions (15, 16 and 17) and each of them was driven on the moon surface three times, one per day during the time the astronauts were there. For wide ranging human exploration of the moon, a pressurized rover that can travel more than 10,000 km in such environments is a necessity.

Though it's meant to carry two people, Toyota says it can fit four in an emergency situation. Through our joint studies going forward, we would like to put to use Toyota's excellent technological abilities related to mobility, and we look forward to the acceleration of our technological studies for the realization of a manned, pressurized rover.
