US Olympic cyclist Catlin found dead in her home at age 23

US Olympic cyclist Catlin found dead in her home at age 23”

Catlin died Friday night at her home in California, according to her father.

Christine Catlin told the Washington Post on Sunday that a series of crashes, in which Kelly broke her arm and suffered a concussion, had had a profound effect on her sister.

"She was not the Kelly that we knew", Mark said.

Catlin won a silver medal at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic games in the women's cycling team pursuit.

She competed for Rally UHC Cycling on the road and was studying for a graduate degree at Stanford University.

Kelly Catlin's description of track cycling wasn't romantic. Being a graduate student while simultaneously competing for the National Team on the track is often more hard.

Kelly was found unresponsive in her Stanford University dorm. Doctors were anxious about her lung development.

Catlin, who took her own life last Thursday, had struggled with depression in the wake of two crashes past year and had also attempted suicide in January. He got her into cycling "kicking and screaming", until she realized she could win races. She also excelled at the violin and as an artist. He told the newspaper that "she was not the Kelly that we knew". Unfortunately, Kelly was exceptional in everything she touched except for taking care of herself.

That love of horses apparently made Kelly a better athlete. "She just felt like she couldn't say no to everything that was asked of her and this was her only escape". "This wisp of a girl would pour on the power and outstrip everyone".

But in January, Catlin's father noticed a difference in his daughter.

The family had been focusing on her recovery in the weeks after the attempt.

"Just a week or two ago, we were making plans and I was optimistic about her future", Colin Catlin said.

How to get help: In the USA, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.

Catlin cycling on a track. "It breaks our hearts to think about it, because we were close to Kelly".

In 2017 and 2018, Catlin also won world bronze medals in the individual pursuit.

But the incident was far from behind them and she appeared frustrated.

Catlin is survived by her parents, Carolyn Emory and Mark Catlin, and her siblings Christine and Colin.

USA Cycling's CEO, Rob DeMartini, issued a statement about her death on March 10.

The cycling community mourns Kelly Catlin's death.

Support will be given to Catlin's staff, coaches, and teammates.

In interviews, Catlin said she felt like "a pretender" in the sport until the 2015 Pan American Games, where she was on the US team that claimed silver. "She spoke like a robot".
