Beto O'Rourke Plans First Iowa Visit Amid 2020 Speculation

Beto O'Rourke Plans First Iowa Visit Amid 2020 Speculation”

Beto O'Rourke is ready to "push the button" to launch his presidential campaign, with the announcement expected to first come on social media, a source familiar with his plans told CNN. "I'd like for you to be a part of it".

In an announcement posted on Twitter, Eric Giddens, an Iowa Democrat who is running in a special election for a state senate seat, said his campaign workers and O'Rourke will be urging students this Saturday at the University of Northern Iowa to vote in his election race.

While he has not formally announced his bid for the presidency, O'Rourke has been polling as a top three contender for the Democratic nomination. While he ruled out running again for the U.S. Senate seat in Texas, he stopped short of revealing if his decision included launching a challenge to President Donald Trump in 2020.

O'Rourke's trip to Iowa will mark his first visit to the first-in-the-nation caucus state, and suggests the Texas Democrat is on the cusp of mounting a presidential bid. The trip will end Saturday with a get-out-the-vote push for a state Senate candidate in Waterloo, followed by an event in Dubuque.

Paul Tewes, who was Barack Obama's 2008 Iowa state director, has also been advising O'Rourke, a source familiar with his role said.

But with his potential appeal in the Democratic field and a general election still unknown, the Club for Growth, a prominent conservative organization, recently released a five-figure television and digital advertising buy in Iowa assailing O'Rourke's "blue-blood pedigree", and labeling him a "scion of a political family", referencing the wealth of his real-estate developer father-in-law. Ted Cruz defeated O'Rourke in November 2018, the former El Paso congressman revealed that he was mulling over running for president in 2020, despite repeatedly claiming that the answer to whether he will run or not is a "definitive no".

Beto O'Rourke is headed to Iowa this weekend.

O'Rourke, who reportedly has ruled out challenging Sen. "UNI, we're counting on you, and we're looking forward to seeing you soon".
