Facebook's massive outage was the result of a server configuration change

Facebook's massive outage was the result of a server configuration change”

Facebook confirmed on Twitter that its suite of apps were offline for some users, stemming from server issues.

It wasn't just Queensland and New Zealand residents either, as there were also reports of calls being made to 911 in California, and other places in the US.

Facebook's desktop platforms and apps were affected in parts of the USA, including the East and West Coast, as well as parts of Europe and elsewhere. The company said it has fixed the glitch. Reuters was not immediately able to verify those claims and the company declined to comment beyond the statement on resumption of services.

As of Thursday, downdetector.com showed 37 percent of problems Thursday morning related to log-in; 32 percent with loading the newsfeed; and 30 percent a total blackout.

Cloud-based, privacy-focused messenger system Telegram added a whopping 3 million new users to its estimated 200 million user base in a single day after Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp all went down. This is an important draw for people concerned with their privacy online, particularly in light of the fact that Facebook, Inc.is reportedly now under criminal investigation for secret data sharing deals. The outage prompted exasperation from business owners and individuals who rely on Facebook's platforms to communicate, and inspired a flood of derision on Twitter, where some users migrated to stay connected. It also affected people on the West Coast, including in Portland.

The prolonged disruption could have financial consequences for the company. "As a result, many people had difficulty accessing our apps and services", a Facebook spokesperson said Thursday.
