How Lori Loughlin and William H”

The two are among 50 people charged for taking part in the largest such scam in USA history, which the scheme's mastermind said in court documents steered some 800 students into elite universities including Yale, Georgetown and Stanford by cheating the admissions process.

Actresses Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin are among some 50 people charged in the massive scam to cheat on admission to elite USA universities that involved bribes, fraudulent test scores and even fake photographs.

Court documents allege that Felicity Huffman, 53, paid $15,000 to secure her eldest daughter a place at university.

Twelve hours later, the Desperate Housewives alum was released from custody after she posted $250,000 bail, according to the Associated Press.

According to court records, Loughlin and her husband, Mossimo Giannulli, the creator of clothing brand Mossimo, "agreed to pay bribes totalling $500,000 in exchange for having their two daughters designated as recruits to the USC crew team" even though they did not participate in crew.

Several defendants, including Huffman, were charged with conspiracy to commit fraud, punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

She is among a group of Los Angeles parents who have been accused of trying to get their children into top colleges as part of a scheme that involved doctoring exam results and bribing college officials. Prosecutors in the USA attorney's office in Boston say his company, Edge College & Career Network, amassed $25 million through the fraud.

"This case is about the widening corruption of elite college admissions through the steady application of wealth combined with fraud", Lelling said Tuesday.

Desperate Housewives star Felicity Huffman, who has also been implicated in the scandal, was arrested by Federal Bureau of Investigation agents at her home on Tuesday and later released on bail. Macy was not charged, but authorities did not say why.

There was also a brief discussion about whether Loughlin would be allowed to discuss her case with anyone.

Prosecutors said it was up to the universities to decide what to do with students admitted through cheating.

William "Rick" Singer founder of the Edge College & Career Network, departs federal court in Boston on Tuesday, March 12, 2019, after he pleaded guilty to charges in a nationwide college admissions bribery scandal. None of the schools or the students have been charged in the case.

Stanford's sailing coach John Vandemoer pleaded guilty Tuesday in Boston.
