Mozilla officially launches Firefox Send”

Those that wish to send files up to 1GB in size can do so without registering, while those that have files up to 2.5GB in size, will need to create a free Firefox account before proceeding. That, or you hunt around the web for any number of "free file upload" services that promise to temporarily host data on your behalf. You can also limit the number of times they're downloaded.

After you click the "Select files to upload button", you pick the file you want to send from your local machine.

Mozilla has announced that Firefox Send - its encrypted file-sharing platform - has exited its beta stage and is now available to all users.

"By default, files are stored for a maximum of either 24 hours or 7 days". They don't need to have a Firefox account to access your file. Finally, you can set a password of your choice for access to the file.

Sometimes, it's a lot easier to dump a file (or a ton of files) into a cloud storage service like Dropbox instead of trying to attach them all in an email.

But even though the details aren't in the public blog post, they have still been available throughout the testing phase. Still, Send shouldn't be trusted with the most sensitive types of data, such as files that might land a dissident or whistleblower in prison.

Mozilla touts Firefox Send as focusing on privacy and uses encryption to protect files.

Firefox Send is now available through the send.firefox.com web portal, but Mozilla said the service would also be available as an Android app in beta later this week. There's never any guarantee that a Test Pilot will result in a final product launch, but Firefox Send has apparently proven popular enough to graduate to a full commercial release.
