NASA says the first person on Mars will likely be a woman”

"It's also true that the first person on Mars is likely to be a woman", CNN cited Mr Bridenstine as saying on a science and technology radio talk show "Science Friday".

"In fact, it's likely to be a woman, the first next person on the moon", Bridenstine, said.

NASA's massive new rocket won't be ready for a moon shot next year, the space agency's top official told Congress on Wednesday.

The news comes ahead of the first ever all-female space walk planned by the space agency at the end of this month.

Bridenstine went out of his way to say NASA was not abandoning the rocket, praising it as "the largest rocket that's ever been built in American history" and saying it remains "a critical capability" for the USA space program. It's a huge step for women in regards to their placement at NASA, because the first female astronauts were introduced in 1968 (a year before Armstrong stood on the Moon), and still, there haven't been women on the Moon or making a big exploration by themselves. Jackie Kagey will be the lead spacewalk flight controller. The most recent class of flight directors was also 50% women, NASA said.

NASA's Stephanie Schierholz told 'It really is the luck of the draw. Today, women comprise 34% of active NASA astronauts, according to the agency.

Happy National Women's Month, indeed.

Solid rocket boosters for the Space Launch System will be stacked at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral. In a scathing report a year ago, NASA's inspector general found that the SLS program would require a massive amount of additional funding that could double the cost of the project to almost $9 billion.

"By studying these precious lunar samples for the first time, a new generation of scientists will help advance our understanding of our lunar neighbor and prepare for the next era of exploration of the Moon and beyond", Zurbuchen said.

'We will use what we learn as we move forward to the Moon to take the next giant leap - sending astronauts to Mars'.

The Space Launch System was supposed to launch the Orion spacecraft in an uncrewed mission in orbit the moon no later than June 2020. But the agency is just now "understanding how hard this project is and that it is going to take some additional time", he said, adding that second launch of Orion with a crew should still belong to SLS.

Construction on Gateway - an orbiting lunar outpost - is expected to begin construction as soon as 2022.
