Sadio Mane double sends Liverpool through to Champions League quarterfinals

Sadio Mane double sends Liverpool through to Champions League quarterfinals”

Sadio Mane broke the deadlock in the tie, following a goalless first leg on Merseyside, with a brilliant solo effort at the Allianz Arena.

The game sprang to life after the 20-minute mark and it was Liverpool that drew first blood when Mane expertly settled a Virgil van Dijk long ball, spun back to his right and chipped into an open net after Manuel Neuer was drawn off his goal line.

"We knew it was going to be very tough".

Liverpool's conviction that they could go toe-to-toe with Bayern on the biggest stage carried them to a 3-1 victory that Klopp heralded as confirmation the club has returned to elite level.

Lyon's Lucas Tousart gave the visitors hope with a goal in the 58th minute, but Messi scored again in the 78th before passing for Gerard Pique and Ousmane Dembele to round off the win.

"We again set a mark for this wonderful club, that we really are back on the landscape of global top football". I thought they were as bad as I've ever seen.

"We knew they would attack a little bit more and we would have more spaces to play and we used it as well". I'm really happy about the result.

"Today also I think we didn't try to play offensive and try to score the goal because we didn't have a lot of chances also and that was our problem today".

Germany also suffered humiliation in the World Cup a year ago when they were knocked out in the group stage and have also been relegated in Europe's fresh competition, the Nations League. We wanted to play more football than we did in first half, and we changed and did that in the second half much better. There are some places in world football that whatever team comes here - Manchester City, Real Madrid, Barcelona - they wouldn't expect to win it.

"To score that [first] goal is obviously a big blow for them because they have to score two and for us we were then unlucky to concede the equaliser, but the second half was outstanding". It's not sweeter for me because it's Bayern. "It's just a good moment for Liverpool, so let's enjoy that".
