Spotify CEO speaks out against Apple with dedicated microsite and video

Spotify CEO speaks out against Apple with dedicated microsite and video”

While Spotify is available for free via Apple, upgrading to its Premium tier service can now only be done via the internet. Right now, both music streaming platforms have the same prices. "Apple, you've got to break it apart from their App Store". Ek says that if Spotify were to pay this tax it would be forced to "artificially inflate" its prices "well above the price of Apple Music", causing harm to the company's business.

The problem boils down to the fact that Apple won't allow Spotify to advertise that subscriptions are cheaper through its website, not the app.

Spotify's claims, while Europe-based, come just days after USA presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren said she would move to break up Apple for reasons that resonate with Spotify's complaint.

The timeline eventually moves to more serious issues, where Apple disallowed alternate payment systems within apps on the App Store and forcing developers to use its own iTunes payment system, which comes with a 30% cut. "We simply want the same treatment as numerous other apps on the App Store, like Uber or Deliveroo, who aren't subject to the Apple tax and therefore don't have the same restrictions", Ek said.

How Apple handles that dual role of gatekeeper to iOS and also an app and services provider is part of Spotify's justification for its complaint to the European Commission (EC), according to the firm.

Spotify wants Europe's competition watchdog to examine Apple for the way it runs the App Store.

Apple didn't immediately respond to a message seeking comment. He said Spotify is asking for three commitments: Services in the App Store, including Apple Music, should be subject to the same rules; consumers should have choice over which payment systems to use for the apps; and app stores should be blocked from controlling communications between services and their customers.

Meanwhile, other developers have also complained about Apple's constantly evolving App Store guidelines, which feels shifting goalposts that the company changes on a whim, often to suit its own interests while claiming to do so on behalf of its users.

Consumers should have a real choice of payment systems, and not be "locked in" to one particular service. In some cases, we aren't even allowed to send emails to our customers who use Apple.

Spotify is also concerned that the company has been "locking Spotify and other competitors out of Apple services such as Siri, HomePod and Apple Watch", wrote Mr Ek. Through their app stores, the two tech giants have for years acted as gatekeepers to iPhone and Android users, dictating how many people shop for apps and pay for their services.

As I recently shared, competition pushes us to evolve and improve both the customer and creator experience.

"Let me be clear that this is not a Spotify-versus-Apple issue".
