Ukrainian hackers used quizzes to leak over 60K Facebook users’ data

Ukrainian hackers used quizzes to leak over 60K Facebook users’ data”

Andrey Gorbachov and Gleb Sluchevsky allegedly used the browser extensions to overlay their own advertisements onto Facebook's news feed when their victims visited through the compromised browsers, The Daily Beast reported.

The apps scraped users' public info, like name, gender, age and profile picture, but also harvested private data like nonpublic lists of friends.

Facebook, in its lawsuit filed on Friday, alleged that the Kiev-based entrepreneurs violated Californian and federal anti-hacking laws, and sued them for fraud and breach of Facebook's terms of service.

The social network giant has been at the center of a firestorm for almost two years after it was discovered that Cambridge Analytica obtained user data for 2016 election meddling. Once users landed on these sites, they'd be prompted to enable push notifications in their browsers, which eventually led the same users to install various browser extensions. "In fact, Defendants knew that the applications were created to scrape the app users' public profiles on Facebook and other social networking sites, and to prompt users to install malicious extensions for the goal of manipulating the users' browsers and collect the users' private and non-publicly viewable lists of friends when the app user visited the Facebook site".

In the period from 2016 to 2018 they compromised about 63 thousand browsers and Facebook have caused damage for the sum more than $75,000. This announcement made by the company came at the same time when a report on the BBC revealed that there had been a breach on people's private messages on the website.

It's been a roller coaster year for Facebook investors. The developer had used an online quiz app that connected to Facebook to gather the data.

If you've experienced your Facebook account getting hacked, you know it's a pain. These browser plugins offered personality quizzes to users on installation.

The scheme seemingly wouldn't have worked, however, if Facebook hadn't approved the hackers as developers who could use its Facebook Login feature. CEO Mark Zuckerberg posted a note while stating a vision of more "privacy-focused" company. The defendant may not face serious consequences, but it will give Facebook the leverage to defend itself.
