WHO Philippines: Measles Outbreak, Situation Report 5, 12 March 2019 - Philippines”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 206 measles cases were confirmed in the United States in the first two months of this year, the highest year-to-date number going back more than a quarter-century.

Vaccine conspiracy theories, as well as fears of vaccines linked with autism in children, are clear to see on social media and other areas of the internet.

Should parents vaccinate their child for measles?

Even though the vaccine is highly effective, globally around 110,000 people died from measles in 2017, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Its Medical Officer of Health, Ramon Pink, said people were infectious from five days before the onset of the rash, until five days after it appeared. Those aged between 29 and 50 will only have had one measles vaccination and are not considered immune.

"It can now be assumed that measles is circulating widely in our community", the Canterbury District Health Board said in a statement.

"Adults who had one vaccine dose are much less at risk than those who have never had any vaccines, but they are more at risk that people that have had two doses". Joyce Mann with the Fond du Lac County Health Department says the number of reported cases continues to grow.

Vaccine supplies have run out in the affected region and tens of thousands of extra supplies are being flown in from around the country, as doctors use their last stocks to vaccinate those most in need of protection, including young babies and those with other health issues. During the coming weeks, a total of around 100,000 doses of vaccines will reach Canterbury.

A major vaccination drive will get underway in the South Island of New Zealand as health authorities respond to the latest measles outbreak which was confirmed recently and is expected to spread across the South Island's Canterbury region.
