Disney Rehires Director James Gunn for 'Guardians of the Galaxy 3′”

James Gunn is returning to Marvel Studios. Apparently this follows multiple meetings between Gunn and Walt Disney Studios president Alan Horn to discuss the situation.

James Gunn has been one of the most active Marvel Cinematic Universe directors on social media, regularly engaging with fans in a number of ways. Deadline reports that, less than a year after he was sacked from the company following the resurfacing of offensive tweets from years prior, Gunn has been rehired as the writer and director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the franchise he launched back in 2014.

IndieWire has reached out to Warner Bros. for an update on what Gunn directing "Guardians Vol. 3" means for "Suicide Squad 2". Persuaded by a public apology by Gunn, Horn made a decision to take him back.

James Gunn was sacked a year ago in July by Disney after a few alt-right journalists made his old tweets public. Disney, a family company that doesn't truck with that sort of thing, fired Gunn, who was immediately contrite and took full responsibility for his dumb awful tweets.

Gunn publicly apologized, saying that his "words of almost a decade ago were, at the time, totally failed and unfortunate efforts to be provocative". "As I've developed as a person, so has my work and my humor", he said in a statement at the time.

After he was sacked, Disney condemned Gunn's past social media posts, which included bad jokes about violence and sexual assault against children.

Gunn added a thank you to Disney and said he was excited to "continue making films that investigate the ties of love that bind us all". "Love to you all". I am always learning and will continue to work at being the best human being I can be. "My days saying something just because it's shocking and trying to get a reaction are over".

Guardians stars, including Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper and Dave Bautista, all signed an open letter calling for Gunn's reinstatement, with Bautista (who plays Drax in the Guardians films) explaining his passionate defense of Gunn in a recent interview with the Tampa Bay Times. The horror film he produced, Brightburn, releases on May 24.
