Google uses its AI expertise to help the blind explore their surroundings”

Google also said that the app will be available for more devices, countries and platforms very soon. The app helps the visually challenged people identify information about their surroundings. Well, the app is now officially available to install and explore by the users of Google's Pixel Smartphone users.

After nearly a year of testing, Google has finally launched its AI-powered Google Lookout app that is created to help visually impaired and blind by identifying the objects around them.

Lookout was first announced at last year's Google I/O developer conference. The most common times, according to Clary, would be in situations where you'd need to ask for help: visiting a new space, reading a document or completing daily tasks.

In order to use the Lookout app, Google suggests that users wear their phone around their neck in a lanyard or place it in their phone pocket so that the phone's camera can get an unobstructed view, and identify all objects in the way of the user.

Google warns users that the app is likely to identify a few things or people incorrectly, as it is a new technology and essentially operates on AI guesses. Google Lookout joins the company's growing list of accessibility apps. The catch? It's only available for people with Pixel devices in the US. The app is well done from the start: when you launch it, it starts by asking you which mode you want to use, so as not to cumber you with navigating menus.

"Lookout uses the camera and sensors on your device to recognize objects and text, and gives you spoken feedback, earcons, and other signals to inform you about what it sees", Google explained in the Play Store description.
