Senate votes to end United States support for Saudi forces in Yemen”

The U.S. Senate on Wednesday dealt a stinging bipartisan rebuke to Donald Trump's foreign policy and his alliance with Riyadh, voting to end support for the bloody Saudi-led war effort in Yemen.

The bill also directs the President "to remove US Armed Forces from hostilities in or affecting the Republic of Yemen, except those engaged in operations directed at Al Qaeda or associated forces", within 30 days after the resolution's enactment.

Opponents argued that the War Powers Resolution does not apply because the not directly involved in combat in Yemen.

The vote puts Congress on a collision course with Trump, who has already threatened to veto the resolution, which the White House says raises "serious constitutional concerns". In an attempt to "halt American military involvement in a foreign conflict", this is the first time the decade-old War Powers Resolution was invoked.

The caucus initially emphasized that the resolution would end United States midair refueling for Saudi coalition warplanes, which the Donald Trump administration ended previous year shortly after Khashoggi's murder.

Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, accompanied by Sen.

The Senate has blamed Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for ordering the death of the USA resident, and are unhappy with Mr Trump's response to the issue.

Wednesday's resolution will be considered in the now Democrat-led House of Representatives, and is thought likely to pass.

Trump has held back on criticizing Saudi Arabia, calling them an important strategic ally and counterbalance to Iran in the region.

Now the U.S. House is in Democratic hands and Blumenthal urged the chamber to "take up and pass this resolution so we can issue a final condemnation of United States' support for this war - once and for all".

In its statement threatening a veto, the White House argued that the premise of the resolution is flawed, and that it would undermine the fight against extremism.

The Trump administration also said it would "establish bad precedent for future legislation by defining "hostilities" to include defence co-operation such as aerial refuelling for the purposes of this legislation".

This decisive vote will end "the American facilitation of the Yemen war and the world's largest humanitarian crises".

Sen. Mike Lee has long called for the end of USA involvement, saying in a speech a year ago that continuing to support the Saudis, especially in light of the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, is "bad diplomacy".

Romney said the USA now provides limited support to the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen, including intelligence-sharing and advice on compliance with the laws of war.

It is the second time the Senate has approved a measure that would curb US military involvement in Yemen. "Now that the new Senate has passed the resolution, the House needs to pass the same clean version of the resolution to finally send it to the president's desk".

"We have been providing the bombs the Saudi-led coalition is using, refueling their planes before they drop those bombs and assisting with intelligence", Sanders said during a speech on the Senate floor ahead of the vote.
