New Zealand mosque shootings: 50 dead

New Zealand mosque shootings: 50 dead”

Police say the killer used military-style assault weapons that appeared to have been modified to make them more deadly for the attacks.

Using automatic weapons, the 28-year-old gunman launched a "well-planned" attack on the mosques when devotees had assembled for weekly prayers, after which mosques across the country were advised to shut down.

Meanwhile, firearms retailer Gun City has come under fire for maintaining a billboard outside Christchurch in the wake of the massacre.

Australian Brenton Tarrant was charged with murder over the shootings at two mosques in Christchurch in which 50 people were killed.

And Trademe, New Zealand's answer to Ebay, said it would halt the sale of semi-automatic weapons while awaiting answers from the government. Video of a gunman in one mosque showed a semi-automatic with a large magazine round.

Tipple said the online purchases followed a police-verified online mail-order process and A-category firearms were bought in three or four purchases.

"We detected nothing extraordinary about this licence holder". "I haven't spoken to her directly, but she has reached out, an acknowledgment of what has occurred here in New Zealand", Ardern said a media conference when asked if Facebook should stop live-streaming.

Police then raided a second home at Lawrence town, near Maclean, north of Coffs Harbour, according to New Zealand Herald.

Only firearm owners are licensed, not weapons, so there is no monitoring of how many weapons a person may possess.

Separately, Trade Me, an online marketplace similar to eBay, said it would remove all listings for semi-automatic guns and parts.

New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said on Monday that her cabinet had made decisions in principle around the reform of gun laws following the mass shootings in Christchurch. There's no movement in New Zealand for that.

A Downing Street spokesman previously criticised the platforms' lack of urgency in removing the content, saying there should be "no safe spaces" for terrorists to promote and share their extreme views and radicalise others."Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other providers have taken action to remove the video and other propaganda related to the attack", they said in a statement on Friday.

Tributes continue to pour in for the victims, as some of their families wait for bodies of those killed to be released after post mortems.

"We have been talking to them". Officials said more charges are forthcoming.

"But some people have said because it was not a battlefield it is okay to wash the body". Tarrant's family was helping the police with their investigation, they said. And the prime minister, whose name was John Howard, had just been elected and he said; "I'm going to do something about this".

The Prime Minister has also reiterated her promise that there will be changes to the country's gun laws.

She promptly labelled the worst peacetime mass killing in New Zealand as terrorism, and set about reassuring a nation that has been largely unscathed by the violence and fears that have afflicted other countries in the past two decades.

They had visited the school to offer their condolences to the affected families and referred to the Muslim community as 'our people'.
