Amazon Plays Doctor With First Medical Industry-Approved Alexa Skill”

Amazon said in a Thursday blog post that the software will allow patients to manage a variety of health-care needs at home using voice, whether it's booking a medical appointment, checking on the status of a prescription delivery or accessing hospital post-discharge instructions. Users prompt, "Alexa, open Providence Health Connect", at which point the application will suggest appointment times at the clinic closest to their home.

Caremerge, the award-winning HIPAA Compliant senior living technology company, is teaming up with Amazon, provider of Alexa voice technology, to bring Caremerge Voice to the fast growing senior living marketplace and deploy Alexa devices community-wide through a robust fleet management system.

The tech giant can now sign business agreements with health providers under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or HIPAA, which means approved third-party health developers can meet the rules that govern how sensitive health information is shared. Patients of the ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) program at Boston Children's Hospital can receive information about appointments through Alexa.

These new skills are created to help customers manage a variety of healthcare needs at home simply using voice - whether it's booking a medical appointment, accessing hospital post-discharge instructions, checking on the status of a prescription delivery, and more.

The scheduling capability is available across 37 of the health system's urgent care centers on the West Coast. Alexa users can now ask the voice assistant to pull up their last blood glucose reading and to provide personalized health tips, according to the company.

John Brownstein, chief innovation officer, Boston Children's Hospital says the hospital first piloted the service four years ago, and that the ERAS service was very convenient for patients and their families.

Cigna and Express Scripts also joined the lineup, offering to manage pharmacy prescriptions, engage in health improvement programs, and track wellness incentives via voice technology. "In particular, we believe voice technology, like Alexa, can make it easy for people stay on the right path by tracking the status of their mail order prescription, helping us further solve the costly and unhealthy problem of medication non-adherence".
