Manitoba is gearing up for a fight over Carbon Tax

Manitoba is gearing up for a fight over Carbon Tax”

Four Canadian provinces have pledged to fight a new carbon tax imposed by the federal government after they had defied Ottawa's push to fight climate change, Kallanish Energy reports. The federal government intends to charge the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on top of the carbon tax, in effect a tax on a tax. It will increase the price of gasoline in Ontario by 4.4 cents per litre.

Pallister said he would withdraw his court challenge if either the joint Ontario-Saskatchewan court challenge succeeds or the Trudeau government is defeated in the next federal election.

Pallister wouldn't directly answer if there's any chance Manitoba could wind up replacing the federal levy with the $25 flat tax. "They stated they would impose their higher - and rising - carbon tax on Manitobans".

The feds plan to raise that by $10 per tonne each year until 2022.

"There is no justification for the federal government to have rejected Manitoba's plan while approving less effective plans from other provinces."

"We hope that, regardless of what happens in court, Manitobans aren't stuck with a carbon tax", he said.

In a statement in response, Winnipeg Liberal MP Terry Duguid says Pallister is wasting taxpayer money by going to court.

Pallister would not say whether he will revive the $25 carbon tax he originally planned if the federal levy is struck down.

"Carbon pollution shouldn't be a partisan issue".

The Made In Ontario Environment Plan was introduced in the legislature last November, and is making its way through the legislative process now.

Pallister said Manitoba's challenge could take two years or more before it is heard, and may not be necessary if the Saskatchewan or Ontario governments win their cases.

The premier said Ottawa imposed the tax on Manitoba while other provinces have been granted "special treatment and exemptions". "If some Conservative politicians choose to not do what's right for our climate and our kids, we will", it read.
