Mozambique: Finland donates €200000 to field hospital following cyclone

Mozambique: Finland donates €200000 to field hospital following cyclone”

An oral cholera vaccination campaign to protect survivors of Cyclone Idai Started Wednesday in Beira, Mozambique.

"If left untreated, cholera can kill within hours", says James Elder, regional chief of communication for UNICEF Eastern and Southern Africa, in a recent op-ed.

The Emirates Red Crescent, ERC, has reinforced its efforts to assist people affected by Cyclone Idai in Mozambique, benefitting over 75,000 people in 17 districts in the three provinces that were most affected by the cyclone, which hit three countries in the southeast of the African continent.

Between 27 March and 07.00 on Tuesday, 1,428 cholera cases entered the treatment units.

A press statement released by World Health Organization on Wednesday said almost 900,000 people are expected to receive the vaccine from the GAVI- funded stockpile.

The cholera outbreak has grown swiftly since it was declared last week with five confirmed cases.

Already the number of cholera cases is more than double the 500 beds set up for patients in Beira that is the center of relief efforts for central Mozambique. "The oral cholera vaccine is a vital emergency measure that will help save lives and stop the spread of this disgusting disease".

Cholera is spread through contaminated food or drinking water and causes acute diarrhoea.

About 884 953 doses of oral cholera vaccine taken from the global cholera vaccine stockpile arrived in Mozambique on Tuesday.

Participants also discussed how to support a well-coordinated response, focusing on immediate humanitarian needs, as well as sustainable medium and long-term recovery and reconstruction in the aftermath of the cyclone.

"Once a person is sick, accessing treatment as quick as possible is of most importance", Mr. Lindmeier said.

According to the health agency, in the fifteen years between 1997 and 2012, just 1.5 million doses of oral cholera vaccine were used worldwide. Since the beginning of 2019, more than 6 million doses have already been shipped to respond to outbreaks or address endemic cholera in many countries including the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nigeria, Somalia and Zimbabwe.
