Post-ASAT, India sees role in drafting space laws

Post-ASAT, India sees role in drafting space laws”

The launch of Anti-satellite Weapon Test (ASAT) on March 27 by India has drawn sharp criticism from some of the commercial space companies.

NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine had said that over 400 pieces of debris had been identified which even travelled above the International Space Station (ISS).

"An orbit of around 300 km was chosen for the test for capability demonstration, and the objective was to avoid threat of debris to any global space assets", Mr. Reddy said. The ISS orbits over 100 km higher than the orbit at which India carried out the ASAT test. India is now the fourth country to have tested ASATs, the others being the United States, the Soviet Union, and China.

India used an indigenously developed ballistic missile interceptor to destroy one of its own satellites at a height of 300 km (186 miles), in a test aimed at boosting its defences in space. However, others have expressed concern over this sort of test which has not taken place since China destroyed a satellite in 2007.

Frans von der Dunk, a space law expert at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, outlined the legality of the test to Reuters; "Unfortunately, there is no binding worldwide legal rule (yet) which prohibits the wanton creation of space debris".

The danger from "space junk" is not that it falls to Earth but that it collides with orbiting satellites.

"Destroying satellites orbiting in altitude bands that are heavily used for both military and civil satellites also can have ripple effects, producing risky clouds of debris that could stay in orbit for decades or centuries, disabling or destroying any satellites they collide with", said Grego in a statement. India became the fourth country to join the club. NASA has identified approximately 400 pieces from the destroyed satellite, of which 60 are larger than 10 centimetres (4 inches) wide-large enough to be tracked by the U.S. military's ground radars, SpaceNews reports.
