Israel has lowest rate of diet-related deaths worldwide”

The study also attributes poor dietary habits to be the cause behind the increase in certain non-communicable diseases such as cancer, heart disease, strokes, and even type 2 diabetes.

Interestingly enough, it is not the presence of junk food in the diet, but rather the absence of healthier and more nutritious food choices in the diet, which the study deems responsible for this issue.

"This study affirms what many have thought for several years - that poor diet is responsible for more deaths than any other risk factor in the world", said Christopher Murray, Director at the University of Washington in the US. The study found that eating and drinking better could prevent one in five deaths around the world. "We are what we eat and risks affect people across a range of demographics, including age, gender, and economic status".

The study, published this week, looked at the health effects of dietary risks in 195 countries between 1990 and 2017, and showed how different national diets cause different problems.

However, tobacco resulted in an estimated 8 million deaths.

Diet that includes less whole grains, while too many unhealthy elements, accounted for every fifth death globally. The other 50 per cent were due to high red meat, processed meat, sugary beverages' intake.

"We are highlighting the importance of low consumption of healthy foods as compared to the greater consumption of unhealthy foods", Dr. Afshin added. In the United Kingdom, the biggest issue is a lack of whole grain, fruit, nut and vegetables in families' diets.

"There is an urgent and compelling need for changes in the various sectors of the food production cycle, such as growing, processing, packaging, and marketing", Afshin said.

"While sodium, sugar, and fat have been the focus of policy debates over the past two decades, our assessment suggests the leading dietary risk factors are high intake of sodium, or low intake of healthy foods, such as whole grains, fruit, nuts and seeds, and vegetables". Dr. Walter Willett, a co-author of the study.

At the other end of the spectrum, Uzbekistan received the unwanted title of the country with the highest rate of diet-related deaths (892 deaths per 100,000 people), followed by Afghanistan, Marshall Islands, Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu.
