Suspected poacher killed by an elephant before being eaten by lions”

A suspected rhino poacher was trampled by an elephant and then eaten by lions at a South African national park.

The paper reports only a human skull and pair of trousers were left.

Three of the victim's friends ran away after the victim was crushed by the elephant in Kruger National Park and rang his family, the Daily Mail reported.

The man's family alerted Don English, the Skukuza regional ranger, after the surviving poachers told them what had happened.

However when a search team went to look for his body, they discovered "only a human skull and a pair of pants", suggesting that his remains had been "devoured" by a pride of lions.

Meanwhile, his three accomplices he was allegedly poaching with in the park have also been arrested. "Skukuza police were notified immediately and are now busy with further investigations into the incident", the park said in a statement.

There's no evidence that rhino horn, made of the same substance as human fingernails, actually holds any medicinal value. The accomplices fled the scene and were later arrested. "During the operation, two.375 hunting rifles and ammunition were seized", said Hlathi.

Glenn Phillips, Managing Executive of Kruger National Park, has praised those who were part of the search party that helped the family find closure by finding the remains.

The suspects appeared in the Komatipoort Magistrate's Court on Friday on charges of possession of firearms and ammunition without a licence, conspiracy to poach as well as trespassing.

"Upon their appearance, the court remanded them in custody and will reappear at the same court on 12 April 2019, pending a formal bail application".
