Adani's Australian coal mine wins further environmental approval

Adani's Australian coal mine wins further environmental approval”

The government has given the green light to the groundwater plan for Adani's Carmichael mine.

Bill Shorten - who, like the government, has been caught between the conflicting imperatives of campaigning in central Queensland and in southern Australia on this issue - said the Queensland government now had to go through its processes.

These are the groundwater plan and another to manage the tiny and endangered black-throated finch.

Adani Mining chief executive Lucas Dow has welcomed the Morrison government's decision on Tuesday, but environmentalists and the Greens say they are appalled.

In a statement, Price said the project was given the OK on the condition it adheres to strict environmental plans, saying the project "has been subject to the most rigorous approval process of any mining project in Australia".

It needed further approvals from the Queensland government before constructing could commence.

The Morrison government has moved to end a damaging split over the Adani coal mine and granted the controversial project its final Commonwealth environmental approval.

The Environment Ministry's clearance means only the approval of the Queensland government is necessary for the project to proceed.

"Adani Mining has been through these planning and approvals processes for more than eight years now", Mr Dow told The Courier-Mail on Wednesday.

"Any politicisation of the approval processes for the Carmichael Coal project cast doubt over all proposed projects, their planned investment and their promised jobs".

Leeanne Enoch's environment department will need to sign off on Adani's groundwater plan. "The Coalition can expect to lose a swathe of seats around Australia for their capitulation to a single coal company at the expense of the community".

"This rushed decision just prior to the election is one of the most compromised environmental approvals this country has ever seen", said spokesperson Carmel Flint, claiming that water resources that are vital to farmers in the region will be damaged by the dig.

The GDEMP was independently evaluated by Geoscience Australia and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), and has gone through 11 assessment rounds with both the Australian and Queensland Governments, according to Adani.

It will tell residents it wants the Queensland government to get the project up and going so it can deliver thousands of jobs.
