NY orders mandatory measles vaccination after Brooklyn outbreak

NY orders mandatory measles vaccination after Brooklyn outbreak”

The city's largest measles outbreak since 1991 has mainly been confined to the Orthodox Jewish community in the borough of Brooklyn's Williamsburg neighbourhood, with 285 cases confirmed since October, de Blasio said at a news conference.

He was joined by health officials who decried what they called "misinformation" spread by opponents of vaccination.

The Brooklyn outbreak has been traced to an unvaccinated child who became infected on a visit to Israel, which is also grappling with a measles outbreak, according to New York City's Department of Health.

The city said it would help everyone covered by the order get the vaccine if it was not quickly available through their regular medical provider.

"We can not allow this unsafe disease to make a comeback here in New York City". There have been 285 reported cases of measles since the start of October in NY, with those most commonly affected being children younger than 18.

A pregnant woman opposed to childhood vaccinations takes part in a demonstration after officials in Rockland County, a New York City suburb, banned children not vaccinated against measles from public spaces, in West Nyack, New York, U.S. March 28, 2019.

Meanwhile, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention elevated its response to measles, establishing a larger team to focus on outbreaks that have sickened 465 people nationwide this year - the second-greatest number of cases reported in the USA since measles was eliminated domestically in 2000.

De Blasio said the number of confirmed cases in Williamsburg has ballooned since Purim and that there are concerns that the disease will continue to spread as families come together to celebrate Passover.

A public health emergency has been declared in New York City as it grapples with one of the largest measles outbreaks in decades, which is centered in the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community in Brooklyn. "They have been spreading risky misinformation based on fake science".

The order is signed to remain in effect until the next meeting of the New York City Board of Health on April 17 at which time "it may be continued or rescinded by the board". Israel, for instance, also has a current measles outbreak. Even now, 1 in 4 people who get measles end up hospitalized. "It is safe. It is effective".

"When you make the decision not to vaccinate your child, please understand you're also making that decision for the people around your child", warned Palacio, who said her services had received reports of so-called "measles parties" held to purposely expose children to the disease.

"And it's everybody's option to do what he wants".

Earlier this week, the city ordered religious schools and daycare programmes serving that community to exclude unvaccinated students or risk being closed down. Schools that don't comply face fines and closure. "We have to stop it now".

In coming weeks, at least three local health systems - NorthShore University HealthSystem, Advocate Aurora Health and Lurie Children's Hospital - plan to send letters to parents of children who aren't vaccinated against the measles.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that all children get two doses of measles vaccine.

County Executive Ed Day, a Republican, said Tuesday that Rockland planned to appeal and is crafting a new order created to isolate people exposed to measles.

The resurgence of the once-eradicated, highly-contagious disease is linked to a growing anti-vaccine movement in richer nations - which the World Health Organization has identified as a major global health threat.
