Google Wing Delivers Food, Meds to Australians Via Drone”

Wing, the company that's an offshoot of Google's parent company Alphabet, has been trialling the technology over the past 18 months, making a whopping 3,000 deliveries to needy people. Project Wing, a subsidiary of Google parent company Alphabet, has been testing self-flying delivery drones in Australia for over a year.

Project Wing estimates that they will deliver 25 percent of all food delivery orders and as much as 6 percent of all purchases in the Canberra metropolitan area by 2030.

Drone deliveries are gaining popularity around the globe.

It will be slow to start, only being available in Canberra suburbs of Crace, Palmerston and Franklin, but it's expected to expand quickly.

Residents in Australia's capital Canberra will be the first to use to the commercial drones, which can fly at an altitude of up to 400ft above the ground and deliver packages "to a location the size of a doorstep". Wing was able to win regulatory approval from Australia's Civil Aviation Safety Authority after almost five years of tests in the country. The Australian aviation authority ordered Wing to develop quieter drones for its deliveries.

"The feedback we have received during the trials has been valuable, helping us to refine our operations to better meet the needs and expectations of the communities in which we operate", the company stated. Instead, Wing teamed up with Mexican food chain Guzman Y Gomez and pharmaceutical retailer Chemist Warehouse for some advanced trials in October 2017. Wing is looking to partner with more companies in the future who are looking to "reach more customers faster, safer and more sustainably".
