Facebook to use AI to respect the dead

Facebook to use AI to respect the dead”

Sometimes these reminders bring a smile to the faces of friends and family left behind.

"These changes are the result of feedback we heard from people of different religions and cultural backgrounds as well as experts and academics", wrote COO Sheryl Sandberg in a blog post.

"Once an account is memorialised, we use AI to help keep the profile from showing up in places that might cause distress, like recommending that person be invited to events or sending a birthday reminder to their friends".

According to Facebook, over 30 million people visit memorialised accounts every month to reminisce about the person or post milestones or stories of their lives. "This lets people see the types of posts that are most helpful to them as they grieve and remember their loved ones". Sandberg didn't explain exactly how the new artificial intelligence features will work, but a Facebook spokesperson told NPR the company will look at a variety of signals that might indicate the person is deceased.

The world's largest social network announced on Tuesday that it will use artificial intelligence apart from improving its existing policies to make things easier for the friends and family of the deceased.

Now, users can post memories and tributes in a separate part of their profile, 'all while preserving the original timeline of their loved one, ' Sandberg said.

First off, Facebook's adding a "Tributes" option for the profiles of deceased users, which can be implemented by a legacy contact.

The company made the changes in response to users' experiences with seeing their loved ones' profiles pop up on Facebook after they had died.

This would still be the case with the new feature, but will give legacy contacts more control over what shows up on the profile after a person's death.

In addition, Facebook will also now allow parents who've lost children under the age of 18 to request to become their legacy contact. These are other Facebook users who they have designated as a trusted person or persons, who can take over in the event of their death.

In the past, there have been instances where Facebook has applied the same AI algorithms to memorialised accounts, as it does to regular accounts.
