Stop & Shop workers walk out after negotiation impasse

Stop & Shop workers walk out after negotiation impasse”

"Today, at 1:15 pm, the United Food & Commercial Workers Local 1445 members who work at Stop & Shop will be walking off their job, " the release said.

Over 31,000 New Englanders have been working at Stop & Shop without a contract since February 23rd.

But what does all of this mean for the average Stop & Shop customer?

How is my store affected?

Stop & Shop stores in West Hartford were closed Thursday afternoon when workers walked out and began a strike.

As of 5:30 p.m., Brogan said, the majority affected stores have been reopened.

It wasn't immediately clear from UFCW on Thursday afternoon how long the strike would last, or how store operations would be impacted.

The company says it's still in negotiations with the union, and is disappointed that workers chose to strike.

According to broadcast reports, managers were keeping stores open and allowing customers to use self-checkout lanes. "We're fighting for our benefits", Clemens said.

In the meantime, here's a map of all 134 Stop & Shop locations in MA.

It's unclear if all stores would have workers rallying outside.

The workers left the job to go on strike at 1 p.m. on Thursday.

The workers in Somerville held signs bearing messages such as "Please don't cross the line". "I hope that it if does reopen, people will respect the picket line", Wenograd said.

Stop & Shop, owned by Dutch multinational Ahold Delhaize, has countered that labor costs are having a "major impact" on the company's ability to compete in the changing market. What about the bank?

The strike affects Stop & Shop's local stores including the Lynn store on Washington Street; the Howley Street store on the Salem-Peabody line, and the Saugus Plaza Stop & Shop. The Dan Fox Drive store in Pittsfield was closed except for the pharmacy and Citizens Bank branch office.

What if I scheduled a Peapod delivery?

"Stop & Shop remains ready and available to meet with the union locals at any time", the statement said.

How big of a deal is this? .

Striking Lynn workers had varied views on how long they can stay out of work.

However, the union hasn't exactly kept quiet about their concerns. The company has also cut staff and relied more on automation, he said.

The union is objecting to changing the pension to a 401 (k) it feels doesn't cover current future beneficiaries; Sunday premiums rather than time and a half (the company says the premium would be equal to time and a half for "current" employees); reductions in sick time and vacation time for future workers; and changes in health care contributions. "They gave us a final offer, and the final offer was a joke. We're going to take action".

"Stop & Shop's parent company, Ahold Delhaize, saw over $2 billion in profit a year ago and got a United States tax cut of $225 million in 2017", the statement said. "While Stop & Shop continues to propose drastically cutting worker benefits, Ahold shareholders voted on April 10 to give themselves an 11.1 percent raise in dividends over a year ago. The expected payout will be on April 25 for around $880 million".

What is the company's stance?

In an outline of its position on the Stop & Shop website, the company states that their contract proposal includes competitive wages, healthcare for eligible employees, and retirement benefits.

Union officials said previously that health care is a central issue, specifically the amount of money employees are asked to contribute to their premiums. "Wage cuts have never been proposed".
