Sudanese Army Won't Extradite Deposed President Omar al-Bashir”

Sudanese demonstrators have defied a curfew by continuing protests against a new ruling military council.

Organizers said they would keep up the campaign and that they disagree with the army's plans to rule the country for the next two years.

The head of the transitional military council, Defence Minister Mohammed Ahmed Awad Ibn Auf said on Thursday when announcing the overthrow of Omar al-Bashir that the council would lead a two-year transition before holding elections.

Protest organisers have said they won't back a military coup and are now in discussions with the military's leadership about forming a transitional government.

Sudanese First Vice-President and Minister of Defence, Lt General Ahmed Ibn Auf, confirmed Omar's arrest yesterday at 2pm local time on television.

The Sudan Professionals Association - a well organised umbella group of doctors, teachers and engineers - has called for a huge turnout at Friday's turnout as has the wider opposition Alliance for Freedom and Democracy.

On Friday, the commander of Sudan's feared Rapid Support Force, a paramilitary force, said it would not "accept any solutions rejected by the Sudanese people" and for "opening the door for dialogue" with the protest movement.

He said the council was also imposing a 10pm (2000 GMT) to 4:00am (0200) GMT curfew. He also announced a three-month state of emergency.

Al-Bashir was declared wanted by ICC in 2005 for war crimes and genocide in Darfur, Sudan.

He also apologised for the regime's resort to strong-arm tactics to attempt to crush the protests which had led to the "loss of people's lives".

Zein Abedeen did not indicate at the press conference that the army would move against the protesters, but made vague remarks how he would "come out. sit on the grass" and talk with the demonstrators. New demonstrations broke out Thursday afternoon in the capital, Khartoum.

Despite enabling the ouster of Bashir, the new administration falls short of the demand for a civilian transition government which protesters, stung by three decades of worsening economy and authoritarian rule, had called for.

In Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, said "the military takeover is not the appropriate response to the challenges facing Sudan".

United Nations chief Antonio Guterres called for a transition that would meet the "democratic aspirations" of the Sudanese people and appealed for "calm and utmost restraint by all", his spokesman said.

Ibn Auf said on Thursday that Bashir was being detained in a "safe place" and a military council - which it was later announced he is heading - would now run the country.

But the rebel Sudan Liberation Army (SLA-AW) fighting government forces in Darfur denounced what it called a "palace coup".

Meanwhile, the Arab League said that it is following developments with regards to Sudan's political transition and will continue to work with the country to achieve peace and stability in it. "Because it didn't fulfill all missions of the revolution, I ask protestors to sit-in in front of army headquarters till the achievement of Sudan's revolution", he said.
