100th Anniversary of Jallianwala Bagh: Theresa May says shameful incident”

Congress President Rahul Gandhi visited the memorial and wrote in the visitors' book: "The cost of freedom must never ever be forgotten".

The British armed forces under the command of General Dyer opened 1,650 rounds of fire at the people gathered for a peaceful protest, killing hundreds of men, women and children trapped inside the garden.

Actress-turned-politician Kirron Kher said: "Remembering the innocent souls who were martyred, mercilessly, for taking a stand for our country's independence this day, 100 years ago".

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a tweet called the tragedy "horrific" and that the memory of those killed "inspires us to work even harder to build an India they would be proud of".

"We deeply regret what happened and the suffering caused", he wrote, echoing comments by the prime minister Theresa May in parliament on Wednesday when she too stopped short of apologising.

The News Services Division of All India Radio will bring you a special bilingual programme today on "100 years of Jallianwala Bagh Massacre".

'You might want to re-write history, as the Queen said, but you can't, ' said Dominic Asquith, Britain's high commissioner to India.

"Remembering the martyrs of Jallianwala Bagh Massacre on the centenary of the most gruesome incident in Indian history".

India can never forget that bad massacre that stigmatized civilization.

The Congress president was accompanied by Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh and state minister Navjot Singh Sidhu, among others. "We salute the people of India who gave everything they had for it. Jai Hind".

Morning Post, a conservative British newspaper, raised a hefty sum of "26,000 pounds" for the benefit of General Reginald Dyer - the man behind the terrible Jallianwala Bagh massacre, according to a recently-released book.

But the British Government has never offered a formal apology for this most heinous of acts.

In the memorial's guest book Asquith, a descendant of Herbert Asquith, prime minister from 1908 to 1916, called the events "shameful".

"India today observes the centenary of ghastly Jallianwala Bagh massacre at Amritsar".

British High Commissioner to India Dominic Asquith, second left, pays homage to commemorate century of the Jallianwala Bagh incident, in Amritsar, India, Saturday, April 13, 2019. "I shall never forget the sight", said Ratan Devi, whose husband was killed. I want children across the United Kingdom to benefit from learning about the Jallianwala Bagh massacre to know what their country did in the name of empire.
