Facebook might fold Messenger back into its main app

Facebook might fold Messenger back into its main app”

She told Engadget that to access those features "you'd still have to open the Messenger app".

Now, Facebook appears to be experiencing something of the sort.

After years of its users wondering why they made a separate app for messages in the first place, Facebook may move chat features back into the main app. "We do not have any additional details to share at this time". While Messenger became its own standalone app in 2011, Facebook eventually stripped the functionality, forcing people to interact with those annoying chat bubbles that gradually filled up your home screen, multiplying like rabbits.

You can take a look at what the switch could potentially look like below.

Researcher Jane Manchun Wong, who is well known for reverse-engineering popular social media apps, posted screenshots to Twitter on Friday of Facebook's app with a Messenger icon in the top right-hand corner, which taps through into the Messenger inbox. According to Wong, the upcoming messages section will be limited to simple text conversations while more advanced features like calls and file sharing will still require the Messenger app.

As of right now, there is no information regarding when the update may come.

Considering this controversial plan that's sending shivers down the spine of privacy advocates while no doubt also facing scrutiny from regulatory bodies around the world, it's certainly not surprising to hear the main Facebook mobile app could regain its messaging functionality before long.
