National Enquirer Being Shopped By Parent Corp. American Media”

Bezos, who also owns the Washington Post, believes the scandal was politically motivated, given Pecker's close relationship with Trump and Trump's dislike for Amazon and the Post.

AMI, Pecker and the National Enquirer have been embroiled in controversies surrounding President Trump.

The parent of the National Enquirer said Wednesday that it is exploring a possible sale as part of a "strategic" review of its tabloid business. The meeting signals that the US attorney's office is escalating its inquiry connected to Bezos's suggestion that the kingdom of Saudi Arabia was behind a National Enquirer story that exposed his extramarital affair and his claim that the tabloid attempted to extort him.

Pecker is alleged to have helped Trump's candidacy through payoffs to women who said they had an affair with the president.

In August, the USA attorney's office in Manhattan agreed not to prosecute American Media in exchange for the company's cooperation in its investigation of campaign violations.

In February, Washington Post owner and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos accused American Media LLC of extortion and blackmail by threatening to publish potentially embarrassing personal photos of him.

Bezos said the tabloid promised not to publish the photos if he stopped his private investigators from trying to find out how the tabloid obtained the texts.

The titles that are being sold, along with the Enquirer, are the Globe and the National Examiner.

The Post also reported that the sale decision was also borne by the displeasure of hedge fund manager Anthony Melchiorre whose $4 billion Chatham Asset Management controls 80 percent stake in the AMI.

An AMI spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for further comment.

American Media Inc. announced in a statement that it chose to sell the National Enquirer, alongside its other tabloids, including the Globe and National Examiner brands.

American Media has been expanding in the last two years, buying Us Weekly, Men's Journal, Bauer's US celebrity and teen line, and TEN: Publishing's Adventure Sports Network (ASN).
