Nvidia driver 425.31 enables DXR on GeForce GTX 1060 and better

Nvidia driver 425.31 enables DXR on GeForce GTX 1060 and better”

That said, we're now unclear on whether these will be released publicly or just to the press and Nvidia partners - we've asked for clarification on this point. Update 11/04/2019: The Game Ready Driver for Anno 1800 with extended DXR support for GTX GPUs is available via the Nvidia GeForce driver download page.

NVIDIA gave us some idea of just how capable GTX cards will be when it comes to ray tracing.

When Atomic Heart launches next year, it will feature RTX support, with ray-traced ambient occlusion, real-time reflections, and shadows.

In terms of compatibility, this new driver supports DXR on the TITAN XP, TITAN X, GTX 1080Ti, GTX 1080, GTX 1070Ti, GTX 1070, GTX 1060 (6GB), GTX 1660Ti, GTX 1660 and the TITAN V. The more demos showcasing the effects possible with NVIDIA's ray tracing hardware available, the more Pascal GPU owners will have the ability to check out these features on their own systems without making a purchase of any kind, and if they find the effects compelling it just might drive sales of the RTX 20-series in the endless quest for better performance.

Shadows, as demonstrated in Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Justice, can also be much more demanding if there are multiple light sources, the type of light source (s) and the geometry of the scene.

Nvidia claims in-game performance will vary drastically across ray tracing implementations, with highly-intensive reflections and global lighting - such as those found within Atomic Heart and Metro Exodus - performing the worst on Pascal graphics cards lacking dedicated silicon. The initial development of DXR and the first DXR demos (including the Star Wars Reflections demo) were all handled on cards without hardware RT acceleration; in particular NVIDIA Volta-based video cards.

The frame rate will drop even further -to 6 to 16 fps- for the game Metro Exodus, which features extensive ray tracing across entire virtual environments. Because the shade of every object, every pixel, can be changed by the objects around it.

Now, before you get all excited, there are one or two points that we need to make clear about NVIDIA's DXR largesse. So you probably won't see significantly different results if you're running, say, a Core i7-9700K instead of a Core i9. According to NVIDIA, there are several techniques of doing ray tracing and the performance impact of each technique depends on a few aspects. All of the tuning for DXR support has presumably been done exclusively on Nvidia GPUs, so how AMD cards would perform in these workloads or with these features enabled is still unknown. The demos, as well as current and upcoming ray tracing titles should let you switch aspects of ray tracing on and off, as well as dial up and down the level of effects so you can get a peek at what the features can do, hopefully without tanking your frame rates into unplayable territory. As you can see below, even the company's newly-released GTX 1660 and 1660 Ti cards offer subpar performance. On the other hand, the GTX Pascal and Turing products, fall back to DXR's software layer to perform real-time ray tracing.
