Carlos Ghosn's detention extended until April 22

Carlos Ghosn's detention extended until April 22”

Ghosn, who is a French, Lebanese and Brazilian citizen, will be held in custody at a detention center in Tokyo until then, whereupon authorities will either have to press formal charges, release him or re-arrest him if they feel he has other accusations to answer. It is unclear when he might be released.

In December previous year, the court turned down the prosecution's demand for an extension of his detention after Ghosn was served a second arrest warrant for allegedly violating the financial instruments and exchange law.

The alliance board, which is meant to replace a Ghosn-driven, Netherlands-based leadership structure, is led by Renault Chairman Jean-Dominique Senard. The scandal also remains a troubling distraction.

Ghosn was arrested for a fourth time on April 4 on suspicion of aggravated breach of trust connected to the misuse of Nissan funds causing a $5 million loss to the automaker.

On Thursday, Carole Ghosn, who had been in France, returned to Tokyo for questioning. Details have not been disclosed, but Japanese media reports say some of the Oman money may have gone to a company run by her.

The former Nissan boss has been charged with falsifying financial documents in under-reporting his compensation, and with breach of trust.

Nissan Motor Co. shareholders earlier this week removed Ghosn from its board, severing a near two-decade relationship with the once-feted auto executive who is widely credit for rescuing Nissan from near-bankruptcy in 1999.

Ghosn's legal team on Friday appealed against Tokyo court's decision to extend his detention, with his lawyer Junichiro Hironaka likening the judicial system in Japan, which allows for the lengthy detention of suspects, to "hostage justice".

Renault owns 43 percent of Nissan.

Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors ousted Ghosn as chairman following his arrest in November, while he was resigned as chairman and chief executive of Renault in January.

They question him on suspicion of misappropriation of funds from Nissan, made via a distributor of vehicles of the manufacturer overseas.
