Man accused of throwing child from mall balcony had been banned

Man accused of throwing child from mall balcony had been banned”

Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda, 24, who was charged with critically injuring a 5-year-old boy at the Mall of America in Minnesota on Friday, has a history of getting into trouble with the law.

'Additional information from witnesses indicated the 5-year-old might have been pushed or thrown, ' Bloomington Chief of Police Jeff Potts said.

Because the family has asked for privacy, authorities are not yet releasing the name of the boy.

As to a motive, police say they don't believe the man knew the child or family, Potts said.

Allina Health officials said an ambulance took the child to Children's Hospital in Minneapolis.

Shortly after the incident, police arrested a 24-year-old man inside the mall, one of the state's leading tourist attractions, after he had fled the scene, Potts said.

Court records show Aranda was arrested on July 4, 2015, after police said he matched the description of a man throwing things off the upper level of the Mall of America to the lower level.

Police said the child, who fell nearly 40 feet, has significant injuries.

A witness Friday at the mall told WCCO that the child's mother was screaming that someone had thrown her child from the balcony.

Potts called the situation "horrific" and said the department was keeping the boy and his family in their "thoughts and prayers". "Oh my God, my baby, someone threw him over the edge, '" Brian Johnson said.

Aranda's criminal record includes two convictions in 2015 for obstruction of the legal process/interfering with a peace officer, as well as convictions for fifth-degree assault, trespassing, and damage to property. Aranda faces a preliminary charge of attempted homicide and is being held at the Hennepin County Jail. He had also swept his hand across a display table at the beauty store Bare Minerals, breaking lip gloss containers and shot glasses, police said.

Police have arrested a suspect!

In October 2015, Aranda was accused of throwing glasses in Twin Cities Grill in the mall.

Potts said Bloomington police had not had any contact with the suspect since 2015, until Friday's incident.

For these past charges, Aranda was banned from the mall through July 2016.

In a separate incident three months later, Aranda reportedly threw ice water and tea at a woman in a mall restaurant when she declined to buy him food, CNN reported. It opened in 1992, has more than 520 stores and is visited by 40 million visitors annually, according to its website.
