Salmonella outbreak in 9 states linked to pre-cut melons, CDC says”

The CDC has issued a food safety alert due to a recent salmonella outbreak from pre-cut melons distributed in 16 states. "However, consumers may still have these products in their homes", FDA officials said in a news release.

The U.S. Food & Drug administration has issued a warning about contaminated precut fruit that has been been linked to salmonella illness in 93 people, requiring 23 of them to seek hospitalization. The fruit has been sold under various brands or labels at Kroger, Walmart, Trader Joe's, Target and Whole Foods. Twenty-three people have been hospitalized and no deaths have been reported.

They were packaged in clear, plastic clamshell containers and sold under various brands.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration made the announcement Friday. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, such as infected aneurysms, endocarditis and arthritis. Most people recover on their own.

Information collected from stores where ill people shopped indicates that Caito Foods LLC supplied pre-cut melon to these stores.

People younger than 5 and older than 65 and people with weakened immune systems are most susceptible to the illness.

Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

A total of 93 cases have been reported in the outbreak, from nine states: Alabama, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin.
