Sheriff: Several Injured after Powerful Storms Hit Texas

Sheriff: Several Injured after Powerful Storms Hit Texas”

On Saturday night, the National Weather Service said the Franklin tornado, which tore up more than half the southern part of the city, was an EF-3 tornado with winds of 140 miles per hour.

The children, ages 3 and 8, were in the back seat with their parents in the front when the tree fell on their vehicle around 3 p.m., said Angelina County Sheriff's Department Captain Alton Lenderman.

On Saturday morning, the storm system dropped large hail ranging from the size of golf balls to baseballs on a broad swath of Texas from San Antonio to Dallas.

"Damaging winds appear to be the greatest threat on Sunday, but tornadoes will also be possible", CNN meteorologist Dave Hennen said. The storm system will continue moving east through MS and into Alabama - which had a deadly tornado last month - overnight Saturday and into Sunday morning.

Authorities say a possible tornado has touched down in western MS, causing damage to several businesses and vehicles. Trees were pulled up by the roots, roofs torn off buildings, and the cinder block foundation was all that was left of a mobile home in the town, which is southeast of Waco. The Robertson County Sheriff told the AP that two Franklin residents were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Mississippi State University's 21,000 students huddled in basements and hallways as a tornado came near the school's campus in Starkville.

The first severe storms were expected during lunchtime Saturday into late afternoon across East Texas, Louisiana, southern Arkansas and eastern Mississippi. The system is expected to arrive in Georgia later on Sunday, which prompted the Masters Tournament to move up all tee times for the final round in hopes of finishing the golfing event before the storms arrive.

A preliminary damage survey found that a tornado with peak intensity of EF-3 and winds up to 140 miles per hour touched down in Robertson County, according to a tweet from the National Weather Service in Forth Worth. Crews will continue to survey the damage over the next few days. About a dozen others were treated at the scene for minor injuries, including people who had to be extricated from their homes, he added. KTRK-TV also noted the storm had winds of 60 miles per hour in Cherokee County, which is near Angelina County, where the fatalities occurred.

Meteorologist Monique Sellers said they've received reports of downed trees, as well as damage to buildings and a transmission tower. Alto is situated about 225 kilometres north of Houston.
