Tom Brady needs a new Patriots helmet after National Football League enforces equipment ban

Tom Brady needs a new Patriots helmet after National Football League enforces equipment ban”

Brady's banned helmet is one of 10 models that are now illegal, and enforcement starts immediately: Equipment managers have been instructed to remove all banned helmets from their locker rooms, and teams will face discipline if the National Football League finds one of their players wearing an illegal helmet, per ESPN.com's Kevin Seifert. Six were banned immediately and four others, including the one often used by New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, were allowed to be worn for one more year.

The NFL released its helmet laboratory testing performance results Friday and it will result in a significant change for Tom Brady. Brady wore an approved helmet for part of last season but reportedly switched back to his previous Riddell VSR-4 helmet model that is on the list of prohibited helmets.

There were no additions to the list of banned helmets for 2019. "A player will not be allowed on the field [wearing such a helmet]". If a player wears a prohibited helmet and the team is found to have been aware of that, the team would be subject to discipline from the league. Prohibited helmets will not be allowed in the locker room and a player wearing a prohibited helmet will not be allowed on the field. "A player will not be allowed on the field (wearing such a helmet)", National Football League executive vice president of health and safety initiatives Jeff Miller said Friday.

"You've seen something a certain way for a long period of time, so I like as much vision as possible with the peripheral vision", Brady said last summer, according to Boston.com. Of the 11 models tested this spring, nine were new to the market, one was tweaked significantly and another had been overlooked in 2018, according to Dr. Kristy Arbogast, the NFLPA's engineering consultant.

The NFL and the NFL Players Association have been putting helmets through new testing standards since 2015. By the end of the season, the number had dropped to just those 32 players, or about 2 percent of the league. That was up from 41 percent at the beginning of the season. There were 214 concussions suffered by players during the 2018 preseason and regular season, according to the league's injury data. It showed that players wearing helmets that placed in the top performing category (shown in green on the poster) had a lower rate of reported concussions than players who wore helmets that did not test as well and were placed in the yellow or red (prohibited) categories.

"One of the things that prevented some players from moving", Crandall said, "might have been about comfort or fit or aesthetics of the helmet, not necessarily the safety".
